5 Ways To Hook Your Students
Apparently evolution tells us that we are 'learning machines', searching, curious, adaptable, seeking pleasure, driven by our rewards circuit and a dopamine release.
Engaging students looking for that moment of realisation that they want to find out more is the key to hooking your students and drawing them into the material you are presenting.
Here are 5 ways you can look to peak the interest of your students in the lesson content you are about to present;
1 Provide a proactive question or fact , ignite curiosity by posing a thought provoking question, or present a startling statistic or fact related to the topic you are covering. "Did you know that...."
2 Use Multimedia and technology to utilize the tools that students are already familiar with and enjoy, short, dynamic videos, interactive quizzes, educational apps and even podcasts.
3 Connect learning to the students lives. Make subject matter relevant by linking it to students personal experiences.
4 Storytelling creating a 'sense of mystery'. We are all drawn to stories. Begin a lesson by weaving a narrative, or presenting a key fact or setting up a problem that need to be solved. 5 Gamify the Learning. Introduce an element of friendly competition or a collaborative challenge to increase engagement. Can be done through quizzing, mini whiteboards and multimedia.
